Makoto's senpai dated her for a while, but unexpectedly broke the relationship off some time prior to her moving to Usagi's school. The breakup had a lasting effect on Makoto, causing her to be drawn to any boy who reminded her of her senpai, no matter how tenuous the connection.
This guy was glimpsed in a flashback, and while we don't get to see very much of him, he's such an important part of Makoto's backstory that he had to be included here. I have a natural tendency to dislike anyone who's mean to Makoto, and this guy's no exception. Look at him, the pillock.
